RECENT CAPTURES

As August draws to a close, the rainy season blankets the Maharashtra region. Eager to explore the Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary, renowned for its stunning flamingos, known locally as Agnipankh. 

Initially, we hesitated to make the trip due to the persistent rain. However, a thought prompted us to reach out to our guide for an update on the weather. To our delight, he informed us that it was sunny in Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary. Excited by this news, we set off the very next morning from Pune by Road trip.

A Glimpse into History

Once a modest fishing village, Bhigwan has evolved into a celebrated bird sanctuary since the late 20th century. Its strategic location along major migratory routes has drawn countless birds. And establishing it as a vital site for conservation efforts and birdwatching.

Nestled near Pune, Maharashtra, Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary is now synonymous with avian exploration. Often hailed as “Maharashtra’s Wetland Paradise” this region features a unique ecosystem centred around the backwaters of Ujani Dam.

Flamingo’s Elegance at Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary

The standout feature of Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary avian diversity is undoubtedly the presence of Greater and Lesser Flamingos. While August may not be the ideal time to see them. But we were fortunate enough to spot a few in a group. These majestic wading birds, with their elegant movements and vibrant pink plumage, truly captivate the eye.

Watching the Flamingos  make soft noises while elegantly walking over the water is truly a sight to behold. The adults showcase beautiful pink beaks and thin, long, curved necks . And the juveniles sport striking black beaks. This scene is a joy to admire.

As one Flamingo takes flight, the others in the group instinctively follow suit. Unfortunately, we missed the opportunity to capture that moment. However, they soon settled a bit further away, and our boat gently drifted in their direction. This time, we were able to capture numerous stunning shots, admired every moment of this captivating experience.

Our guide told us during the winter months from November to March, Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary transforms. As these migratory birds flock to the area, creating a breathtaking sea of pink across the backwaters. In addition to the flamingos, the region provides an excellent opportunity to observe a variety of other migratory species. The winter skies come alive with flocks of birds such as the Bar-headed Goose and Common Teal and many others . Which are renowned for its remarkable long-distance migrations. Which enhance the avian spectacle that Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary has to offer.

A Symphony of Moments: Life in Harmony

As soon as we settled comfortably in the boat, a pond heron suddenly hovered overhead. As if welcoming us to its territory. Our three-hour boat safari was already beginning, and the entire scene was incredibly peaceful.

Since we were on a rowboat, our driver also served as our guide. Here’s an interesting fact. A local boy named Sandip Nagare has dedicated himself to documenting the avian species of Bhigwan in a photo book. Now, he teaches other village boys about this fascinating field. One of his students was our guide for the day. And sharing insights in both Marathi and English while demonstrating a keen understanding of bird behaviour.

Scene that Speak : Life in Harmony

As we glided across the waters, a captivating sight unfolded before us. A group of Painted Storks effortlessly coexisting with humans tending to their daily tasks. This remarkable scene illustrated the adaptability of these birds to human presence. And highlighting the unique harmony between nature and daily life in Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary.

Visual Verse : Capturing the Essence

Another beautiful scene unfolded as we glided across the water. In the centre, we spotted a tree adorned with numerous Indian Cormorants perched on its branches. It truly felt like a “Cormorant Tree.” As we passed by silently, most of the birds remained undisturbed, with only a few taking flight. Meanwhile, a Grey Heron joined them, adding to the serene tableau. This captivating sight showcased the harmony of nature in this tranquil setting.

Weaver Bird Nest spotting : A fun adventure

As we glided further, we noticed numerous weaver bird nests hanging from the trees. Surrounded by the pristine blue waters of the reservoir, the scene was truly enchanting. Our guide pointed out that some of the birds were busy crafting their nests in the distance. We watched in awe as the small yellow birds diligently wove their intricate nests, showcasing their remarkable skill and dedication. This captivating display of nature added yet another layer of beauty to our experience in this serene environment.

Boat Safaris at Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary

Experience the beauty of Kumbhargaon ( our starting point for Boat Safari) by embarking on a private boat . And allowing you to explore a wide range of bird species while getting as close to them as possible. During the safari, you’ll have the chance to observe various birds, capture unique photographs, and even witness birds in action.

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to explore Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary is from November to March. During these months, the sanctuary comes alive with migratory birds. Which includes the majestic Siberian crane, flamingos, and various species of storks. The cooler temperatures and vibrant landscapes during this period create an enchanting atmosphere for visitors

Sustainable Approach adopted for Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary

In recent years, significant conservation efforts have been initiated to protect the delicate ecosystem of Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary. Local NGOs and wildlife organisations are working tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this sanctuary. Through community involvement and education, they aim to ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary.

Farmers around the waterbody had been encouraged to switch from sugarcane. Which requires heavy use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. And advised to traditional health food like bajra (pearl millet) and jowar (sorghum) . That can be grown with safe organic fertilisers.

This would reduce the chemical run-off during monsoons, which leads to water pollution and disruption of the food chain. 

Local villagers continue to practice traditional fishing methods . And increasingly rent out their boats to birdwatchers . Who are flocking to BhigwaBird Sanctuary for a glimpse of birds of this wetland.

Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary stands as a testament to the harmonious relationship between nature and human activity. And particularly in the realms of photography and sustainability. 

Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary serves as a vital reminder of the importance of preserving our natural world. While celebrating its beauty through the lens of a camera. And creating a lasting impact on both wildlife and the art of photography.

Keen birders might spot elusive raptors like the Black-winged Kite soaring overhead or the Indian Spotted Eagle perched on a tree, and many others avian species surveying its territory. But as we have only day its not possible to go to other side. So finding peace with Boat Safari this time .Signing off till next visit with other avians surprises.

Preserve the natural beauty of the world , as it is the greatest gift we can give to future generations.
