No place is dull when accompanied by a restful night’s slumber and your trusty camera. Capturing a moment freezes time and reveals the incredible beauty around us.
Last year, I heard a lovely, fleeting bird song but couldn’t figure out where it came from. The melody lasted only a few seconds, sparking a mission to uncover the mystery singer. I carefully noted when and how often it sang, but its secret remained safe.
This year, luck found its way to my balcony. Every morning, a bird arrived, greeting the day with a sweet melody as it explored.
Recently, that same tune returned, just as I got new equipment, including a telephoto lens. This time, I managed to photograph the elusive male purple sunbird. That marked the start of my bird-watching adventure. Day after day, the bird came back, curiously peeking into every nook.
Soon, a partner joined in – a female sunbird. She sported olive and yellow plumage, while he wore vibrant purple. Together, they transformed our balcony into a cozy love nest, using hanging socks as their building blocks. Nature adapted, using socks instead of branches for their nest.
The female tirelessly worked on the nest for about a week. With delicate precision, she weaved each piece into a masterpiece. The nest had a side door and a hood, showing off her skills.
Watching her create was a window into nature’s artistry.
Three weeks passed since the nest’s creation, with the female guarding it day and night. It was clear: something big was about to happen.
Despite my watchful eyes, the secret remained hidden. But hope was in the air. Sometimes, the male sunbird checked in. Just like us, both parents shared the duties.
Then, after more than three weeks, a surprise arrived – the chicks hatched. They were too tiny to see properly, but their peeps echoed the joy of new life. Both parents flitted back and forth, feeding their hungry babies. The tiny, busy birds made sure everything was safe before landing on the nest.
Flower nectar and an occasional bug were their treats. They often visited flowers, their quick movements making photography a challenge. Still, I managed to get some shots without disturbing them.
Soon, the air was filled with baby chirps. After about two weeks, the chicks recognized their parents’ calls. Both mom and dad diligently brought food, a true team effort. In about 17 to 18 days, the chicks took their first flights – a true coming-of-age tale.
The nest sat empty, but the parents dropped by. Some say they reuse nests. Our society’s green spaces nurtured their existence. This two-month journey gave me insight into these pint-sized wonders, measuring just about 10 centimeters.
Behind-the-scenes photos showed their world untouched.
Nature’s beauty was right on my balcony, a reminder that magic can be found anywhere.

Wonderful sequence of events and the connection with nature. In fact nature walked right into your home for close observation. I had similar nesting in one corner of my house this May, 2023. Me and my wife thoroughly enjoyed the response of parents nest building, hatching by female mostly sitting in nest and the in feeding and caring the new born chicks till they fledged one day around 8 June. Thanks for sharing good observation.
